Speedpaint/Art discussion: "Making art your job, pros and cons"

Azarian Stories, yay!

This is a reward for a kind supporter on Patreon, :iconcpat:! He requested a headshot of my character Iza the Azara, hissing.
You may remember her from my novel Sleight of Hand, which, if you haven't yet, you can read here!  Azarian Stories - Sleight Of Hand Cover by ARVEN92
This was so much fun to draw! it was interesting to attempt a more realistic take on fur, although something about the finished piece ticks me off :P

Anyway, the speedpaint for this piece is available on Youtube!

With this video, I introduced my first art discussion, where I talked about the pros and cons of having art as your full time job.
Let me know your thoughts about the subject, and which arguments you would like me to tackle in the upcoming videos! I'm open to suggestions :)

And if you feel particularly generous, consider supporting me on PATREON!

I watched the video, and the discussion about making art your job was very interesting!

I don't think I could give you any advice here, as I think this is unfortunately that kind of decision, that everyone has to make for him/herself. However, as you asked your watchers to share their views, I think it's OK if I do so. But be warned: Whenever I start to write, I usually write way too much, so this will be a very long comment.

One one hand, it's very true that money alone doesn't make you happy. There is no point in wasting your whole life by working in a job you dislike, just to finally die as a rich but sad person. And working in a job you hate might even make you ill. For example you might get severe depressions or a burn out syndrome. And in the worst case you aren't able to work anymore. You said your job already has negative effects on your health, so probably that's not the right way to go.

I know what I'm talking about. I tried to study chemistry, but after one year at the university I had to realize that it wasn't what I want to do. But I decided that I couldn't quit because I didn't know what else I could do, and I was afraid of either being unemployed or being forced to do jobs that I would not only dislike, but that also wouldn't be payed well. I thought that while I unavoidably would get a job I dislike, a university degree would at least make sure I would be payed well enough. However, forcing myself to do this deteriorated my physical and mental health to an extant I wasn't able to continue my studies. I still had no degree, but I had wasted some years and much money, and also ruined my health on the way to an extent, that I still suffer a bit from it now.

But on the other hand, while money alone doesn't make you happy, it can give you opportunities that in turn can make you happy. For example if there is something you absolutely want to have, if you have the money, you can just buy it. Or if you want to travel somewhere, if you have the money, you can afford it. And having no money can indeed make you unhappy, if you constantly have to worry if you have enough money for whatever you need.

And there is another thing you might consider: If you turn your hobby into a job, you might suddenly have no hobby anymore. I know you really like drawing. But would you still like it that much, if you wouldn't do it for fun anymore, but because you have to in order to earn enough money?

Some people have told me that I'm quite good at writing (probably not in English, which isn't my first language) and after I had to give up my studies, I was asked if I would do this as a job While I don't think I would be good enough to do this, even if I had the opportunity, I was (and still am) sure that I wouldn't do it. Because it wouldn't be fun anymore if I had to do it for a living.

Sometimes there is another option, some kind of compromise: I know that some people work part-time in a "normal" job and use the spare time for their art. But of cause that is isn't possible in all jobs.

As I said, you have to make the decision for yourself. But If I could give you one tip, it would be: If your current job feels as bad as you have said, I think you should try to find something else, because otherwise it will make you sad or even ill someday.

But however you decision will be: I wish you all the best!

And a final thought: If you decide to keep this or another job and do art just as a hobby, you might find yourself in a situation where you don't have enough time or energy for it. (I haven't written much during the last year, because when I come home from work I'm just to tired to do much else.) This would be sad, not only for you, but for everyone who likes your art (like me).

You might think, you'll do it later, someday.
One month ago, a very good friend of mine suddenly died. He had plans what he wanted to do later; now he will never do it. There I realized that later might become too late someday, and I might not notice it before it's indeed to late and later has become never.
So while I of cause whish you health and a long live, if you really want to do something, I would recommend you not to wait to long.
