I love this page, maybe a bit more than some of the others! You just did a fantastic job at showing all the colors that real lions vary in. ALL the lions you've put in this comic have special colors, which makes them easier to recognize and identify them. All this action so far is pretty intense and making it hard to stay patient and wait for the next page! I have to say, it seems you've done this in colored pencil, am I right? Its actually hard to tell what you did to draw this comic so far, and I have to say; You do an amazing job at covering up all the white. [If you really DID use colored pencils that is]
Its actually pretty funny seeing how the lions mistake a kind, more happy leopard for a [What sounds like] rude and mean one.
This has taken us SO far into the story since the first page! I'm amazed, and also you take time [And leave those darned cliffhangers; HOW DARE YOU XD] to get to a certain and very exciting point.
I have to say; Actually... WE [All your readers, followers, friends, etc.] have to say thank you! You take up probably PRECIOUS time in your life, just to post and make us all happy! We don't know whats going on in your life, like if your an age where its hard for you or your going through something tough... Just know that us, we support you no matter what your going through. AND I MEAN THAT!

Thank you, SO much! :)

Could be the lionesses are daughters. Baba means father, or grandfather in many languages. But its also a generally endearing term, so could be applied different ways

Am i the only one who imagines bes with a russian accent?
Ok how low is the IQ of this pride :'D?Can no one tell apart a female from a male?If not by looks then by voice or scent?
I mean even if they would still want to kill her after they saw she was not Chui would not bother me as much as how dense they are right now :XD:.

Guys. This isn't the Lion King. Even if the lions figured out that Africa wasn't Chui (which I doubt they can even tell the difference, truly), do you really think they're going to care? Just...chill out and have a conversation over the misunderstanding? The whole reason zebras evolved all stripy was to take advantage of lions' terrible vision; they can't tell where one zebra ends and another begins when they all stand close together, so how should they be able to tell the difference between a rival species they only interact with competitively? Why should they care to? Also a thing to note, cat scenting ability may be better than ours, but it's nowhere close to that of canines'. They probably can't even smell Africa, perhaps aside from her fear.

This is Big Cat Diaries. Lions see a leopard, they kill the leopard. It doesn't matter who the leopard is. Africa claims she isn't a threat, but how are they meant to trust her when it's a fact of life that big cats kill each others' young all the time? Africa grew up relatively sheltered as well, which I think is another thing people aren't realizing. She looked up to Nadira growing up, an open-minded gazelle, a prey animal that generally gets along with other prey animals, even across species. As the protagonist, Africa's view influences the audience's view, and that view happens to be pretty idealistic. Africa expects the lions to see reason, therefor so do we.

But they aren't going to. They physically can't, and even they could, they wouldn't.

(Not meant to be attacking anybody, just trying to clear up all the panic down below! Heart)

I have to say, thank you for the fun fact about zebras! o-o
That would definitely explain why these lions mixed up the two.

Oh, there are two female lions nuzzling him. I only saw one at first. They blend in well with the ground! Haha. So they're his favorite females maybe?
Sanluris Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2018  Hobbyist Photographer
Bow down to Father Bes, he's the biggest and laziest. Hahah. He is a beautiful lion though, like all of them. And I guess the female nuzzling him is his favorite?
I hope they figure out that Africa is a female, and not Chui, soon.
Kiemari Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2018  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I really love this page! The facial expressions are very well done, and the coloring is really vibrant!

Also, to people who keep asking why they don't regonize that Africa is female and therefore not Chui... I saw this on a national geographic documentary that tried to decipher why a male lion killed a female cheetah and then attempted to hunt down the three male cheetah that had been swarming her in an attempt to mate, when lions normally live pretty peacefully alongside cheetah's since they steal a cheetah's kill pretty often, and cheetah's pose no physical threat as a lion outmatches them in strength and body size. While debating this they also touched on lion and leopard rivalry, and wondered if the lion might've been incapabale of seeing the difference between a cheetah and a leopard. Lions delibiretely hunt down leopards, and in rare cases even cheetah's. There's been research done on this, and as leopards and lions compete for both territory and prey, it is not uncommon for either to go after each others cubs. Lions will attack and kill a leopard given the chance in order to protect their cubs and to get rid of competition, and vice versa. It is theorised that lions can't see the difference between spotted cats, though I'm not sure this has been proven yet. I don't know if this is accurate or not, but to me it makes sense and seems logical enough. It's no different than lions viciously killing any hyena they can get their paws on without risking their own hide.

To be honest here for just a second............ I absolutely adore the way they're kind of fan girling all over Bes. owo
Scarl3tPanda Featured By Owner Edited Feb 7, 2018  Hobbyist General Artist
I was wondering the same thing about being confused with Chui when Africa is so much leaner. But I would assume that this pride hardly ever see Leopards in their territory so, they're going to assume it's the only one they've ever met coming back to a place he's familiar with? They possibly can't tell the differences between Males and Females either if Chui is the only one they've seen.

Can't wait to find out what he's done to anger them so much xD

Btw I've been planning to read this for days, and I finally got around to it! Just finished this page at half past one in the morning. This comic is amazing, I love your drawing style (You are so GOSH DARN good at drawing animals) and I can't wait to see where the story goes!

Wouldn't he notice the difference in voice/gender?
Or is that not how it works here?
Flare-the-Night-Fury Featured By Owner Edited Feb 7, 2018  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
What I don't get is how they mistake her for Chui when they look very different. She has a different body shape compared to him (for example, she is a bit leaner while Chui is larger and more muscled) He also has a collar on his neck. Unless the lions met him when he was younger and before he got the collar and when he was a bit smaller, in that case it makes more sense. I'm not trying to be rude though, I really enjoy reading this comic. Hopefully Africa can get out of this one without anyone getting hurt

Lol that casanova xD It's cute and funny how you interpreted the Prides society as more sentient creatures. I can imagine if could be interesting or even a bit hard to really interpret this more human-ish =P

I would like to know your take on why they don't really ditinquish male or female leopards. I would assume they'd smell an animals' sex and know whether it is male or female.. How did you interpret this? :3
Diluculi Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2018  Hobbyist General Artist
I always assumed the lions do not care that much. I mean, surely scents can be disguised (and they had been in that really salty and probably smelly mud before) and it could be some kind of "racism" towards leopards, claiming they all look the same to a lion?
Stratadrake Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2018  Hobbyist General Artist
I am curious too.  Do they not know that Chui wears a black (and sometimes beepy) thing around his neck?
Jose1106 Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2018  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Perhaps Chui wasn't wearing it yet? When the zebras were at the lake and attacked by Chui, he was young and didn't have the collar on. Hmmmm

I'm worried about our protags but these lions are such fun characters even so far! I love the happy chirpy female who welcomes the pride leader. XD
(part of me has wishful thinking of having Africa making friends with them after this misunderstanding is settled, hopefully in a none violent manner, as they do share a common enemy, Chui XD)

Fun fact: Simba means lion in Swahili.
I wonder if Disney took patent on the name Simba so it can no longer be used regularly in the Swahili language LOL

Lord-Lavrahtheen Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2018
to quote wikipedia: "...protector of households, and in particular, of mothers and children and childbirth. Bes later came to be regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad".

So, in the context of a male lion protecting his pride, that's a pretty fitting name
pinocchioo65 Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2018
that's what I thought: I've never heard of him XD
iamSketchH Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2018
Bes probably just hasn't got a real good sniff of Africa yet. However, it's not like lions are friends with leopards anyway.
But, besides that, I love the relationship between him and the lionesses.
NovaAlexandria Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2018
I cant help it, I love the goofy, cartoony expression of the Lioness on the far right of the last panel.
pinocchioo65 Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2018
the lost and helpless cub? are these lions serious or seriously thinking that a male leopard is taking care of babies? Not only Africa fell on a lion band but more, the most stupid of all the bush! It's really bad luck.
DevilAntRat Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2018  Student General Artist
When you see a gorilla can you tell their sex on first glance?
pinocchioo65 Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2018
no, but they seem rather sure that Chui is a male and the males do not take care of the young. (It would be funny if they took Chui for a female from the beginning XD) Then lions are supposed to have a better flair than humans and males and females do not have the same smell. otherwise, unless you know it, you can not tell the difference.
DevilAntRat Featured By Owner Feb 8, 2018  Student General Artist
yes they have different smells but have they learned to decipher and note that difference?

We have really good eyes as humans and there is plenty of visual clues for male and female primates, does that mean we can recognize their sex at first glance?
pinocchioo65 Featured By Owner Feb 8, 2018
Well, even if they have never met a female before africa, they must realize that she does not have the same smell as Chui. Moreover, even if it was another male, it still does not have the same smell so either they are stupid or they are very inattentive.
DevilAntRat Featured By Owner Feb 9, 2018  Student General Artist
err.. well so when humans don't recognize the difference between a male and female ape, they are stupid or very inattentive?
pinocchioo65 Featured By Owner Feb 9, 2018
oh come on! I do not speak of humans or monkeys. I'm talking about lions who are supposed to rely on their sense of smell! I want to admit to having been aggressive or slander but it does not prevent lions who are unable to realize that the leopard they are addressing is not the good, despite the fact that they are close enough to sniffle its smell, have a problem.

in addition, humans trust their sight more than the rest of their senses.

DevilAntRat Featured By Owner Feb 10, 2018  Student General Artist
we've been over it already.. I used the sense of sight of humans and how it doesn't allow us to recognize the sex of other apes at first sight as a point of comparison to the sense of smell of Lions and how it could potentially not allow them to recognize the smell of other felines at first sniff..
